Wetting and Adhesion on Nano-Patterned Surfaces

In nano and bio-technologies, many ojects of micrometer or nanometer size are deposited on solid surfaces. Hence, the adhesion of these objects is an important technological issue. It is possible to control adhesion by means of nanoscale patterning of the substrate. We shall discuss some precise examples, related to the adhesion of liquid drops, solid quantum dots, membranes (cell membranes, graphene …), and filaments (biological filaments, carbon nanotubes, …). We will see that these problems, which have a long history since Euler and Young, are a rich playground for statistical physics, nonlinear physics, and non-equilibrium processes.
