Título: Grounded vs Isolated Conductors in the Casimir Effect
The Casimir effect for a system of neutral conductors depends on a detail
which may sometimes be overlooked: whether the conductors are grounded or
isolated. We study the difference between those two situations, and
quantify it for a zero-temperature system and also for the so-called
classical Casimir effect (i.e., in the high temperature limit).
We show that the difference between those two cases can be written in terms of a fluctuation determinant depending on a generalized, frequency-dependent
capacitance matrix. Using a multipolar expansion, we show that the
grounded Casimir energy includes a monopole-monopole interaction term that
is absent in the isolated case.
