TITULO: The Quark-Gluon Plasma. A few results and many puzzles
Resumo: After motivating the search for the Quark-Gluon Plasma, I will describe our current understanding of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, focusing on the consensus that an opaque fluid has been produced in such collisions. I will argue that this suggests we have produced a strongly coupled system and that novel techniques, such as gauge/string duality, might be required to understand its properties. Conversely, the experimental study of heavy ion collisions might provide us with a laboratory to experimentally test predictions from string theory. Despite these exciting developments, conclusive evidence that we have produced a deconfined state of matter is still missing, as we do not understand how this "opaque fluid" phase relates to the onset of deconfinement. I will conclude by suggesting experimental measurements, both at the LHC and in lower energy collisions, that may clarify these issues.
