TÍTULO: Universal phenomena in surface growth and erosion at submicrometric scales

RESUMO: The recent widespread interest in processes at micro and nanometric scales has increased  the physical relevance of the surfaces and interfaces constituting system boundaries. Far from equilibrium, universal properties occur, such as scale invariance or surface pattern formation. However, descriptions of these systems feature limited predictive power when based on universality principles only. We will consider examples from Materials Science that underlie the importance of describing growing surfaces by means of (phenomenological) constitutive laws, in order to correctly describe the rich behaviors experimentally found. As a bonus, this approach also provides new models that can be of interest in the wider contexts of Statistical Mechanics and Nonlinear Science. One of these examples will be provided by growing interfaces which evolve through the interplay between diffusive matter transport and aggregation kinetics as, e.g., in thin film production by chemical vapor deposition. The second example will be taken from surface nanostructuring by ion-beam sputtering.
