Título: Black Hole Explosions!
Resumo:
Black holes are some of the most enigmatic objects in our Universe. Up until 1974 it was believed that, in isolation, black holes do not emit any radiation. In 1974, in a paper graphically entitled ?Black Hole Explosions??, Hawking surprised the scientific community by showing that, when quantum physics is included, black holes in isolation do emit radiation. This emission takes away energy from the black hole, which eventually disappears. In this Colloquium, we will describe classical and quantum properties of black holes, including Cosmic Censorship, Hawking radiation and a fundamental paradox that it raises. That is the Information Paradox, as yet unresolved: where did all the information of the matter that initially collapsed to form the black hole go after it has disappeared? We will also present a recent result of ours in 2+1-dimensions, where we show that the backreaction of quantum radiation on a ?naked singularity? (i.e., a space-time singularity without an event horizon) turns it into a black hole.
This Colloquium is in honour of the recently deceased Prof. Stephen W. Hawking.
