TÍTULO: Nature-Culture Paradox: A Historical Analysis of the Occupy Movement and the Anthropocene Debate in the U.S.

Resumo:
In 2000, a group of scholars in chemistry and climate science, development and environmental studies proposed the term the ?Anthropocene? to define the emergence of a new geologic epoch, in which ?humans are not an outside force perturbing an otherwise natural system but rather an integral and interacting part of the Earth System itself? (Steffen, et. al., 2011).  Debated in scientific conferences, scholarly journals and popular magazines, many have embraced the concept to draw attention to planetary environmental concerns.  However, the Anthropocene presents a dual challenge: to address the biochemical, physical, ecological, and environmental consequences of human activities and to consider the historical, cultural, economic, and ethical relationships that link our futures to the future of the planet. This implies a thorny but critical paradox: How do we both account for nature and culture as apparently separate realms of study, and understand the fundamental ways in which they are entwined? In the U.S., nature or wilderness is often understood as a place apart from human control, and this separation manifests in academia as well, where intellectual, methodological, and professional boundaries have sharply divided the sciences and humanistic disciplines.  But the Anthropocene demands that we reimagine the interconnections between nature and culture, past and present, environment and equity, nations and the global community.  Drawing upon my recently published work with colleagues in environmental history and American Studies ? Rendering Nature: Animals, Bodies, Places, Politics (Univ. of Pennsylvania Press, 2015) ? I will discuss the Anthropocene debate and the Occupy Movement in the U.S. as examples of the challenges and possibilities of living in the nature-culture paradoxes of our time.
