The graphene lattice: temperature effects and distorsions

The perfect hexagonal lattice of graphene is not only the origin of its unique electronic properties but also an ideal realization of a truly two-dimensional crystal with not less exceptional behaviour. Graphene has a rippled structure at any finite temperature, negative thermal expansion, a peculiar phonon spectrum and melts in an unusual way. These and other lattice properties, like defects and edges, calculated by accurate atomistic simulations will be briefly discussed.
