Título: Sturmian Functions as a tool to solve physics problems

Palestrante: George Rawitscher (Univ. of Connecticut)

Abstract:
Sturmian functions, their definitions and properties are first described. Next. various applications are presented, such as in the calculation of atomic bound states in Helium, the solution of a Schroedinger equation with non-local potentials, and the calculation of resonances in nucleon-nucleus scattering.  An advantage of  expansions into sturmian basis functions is that they lead to algebraic equations that are generally easy to solve. However, a disadvantage is that these expansion  tend to converge slowly, leading to uncomfortable truncation errors. This defect can be corrected for by an iterative method, as will be described.
